What is your university, liberal arts & sciences education for? What is it good for? What does it lead to?
Your inclination might just be to say that it is for all of these things, and more. Or, it might be to say that it depends on the person, that everyone decides for themselves what education is for. But is there a way of deciding whether it is for one of these most basically? Perhaps more importantly, is it possible that we could be mistaken about what education is for? Could we think it is for one thing, and in fact it is for something entirely different?
Perhaps there is no good answer to the question. But in just raising the question, I am raising the related question of whether it is doing a good job of what it is supposed to do, whatever that is, and what form of education might meet the proper goal of university education.
