Technology and the Florida Sunshine State Standards

Students must learn to use technology effectively to be prepared to live and work in our complex,information-rich world. Technology skills for students are woven throughout Florida's Sunshine State Standards. Although technology can be used to help students meet many of these standards, a panel of Florida's educational technology leaders has identified Standards in which technology should be considered an integral component. This listing below is just a sample. Language Arts
  • uses basic computer skills for writing, such as basic word-processing techniques such as keying words, copying cutting, and pasting; using e-mail; accessing and using basic educational software for writing. PreK-2nd.
  • uses electronic echnology, including word-processing software and electronic encyclopedias, to create, revise, retrieve, and verify information. 3rd-5th.
  • selects and uses appropriate technologies to enhance efficiency and effectiveness of communication. 3rd-5th.
  • uses a variety of reference materials, including indexes, magazines, newspapers, and journals, and tools, including card catalogs and computer catalogs, to gather information for research topics. 6th-8th.
  • uses electronic technology including databases and software to gather information and communicate new knowledge. 6th-8th.
  • selects and uses a variety of electronic media, such as the Internet, information services, and desktop publishing software programs, to create, revise, retrieve, and verify information. 9th-12th.
  • effectively integrates multimedia and technology into presentations. 9th-12th.

  • adds and subtracts whole numbers to solve real-world problems using appropriate methods of computing, such as objects, mental mathematics, paper and pencil, and calculator. PreK-2nd.
  • analyzes real-world data to recognize patterns and relationships of the measures of central tendency using tables, charts, histograms, bar graphs, line graphs, pictographs, and circle graphs generated by appropriate technology, including calculators and computers. 3rd-5th.
  • selects and uses appropriate instruments, technology, and techniques to measure quantities in order to achieve specified degrees of accuracy in a problem situation. 6th-8th.
  • analyzes real-world data by applying appropriate formulas for measures of central tendency and organizing data in a quality display, using appropriate technology, including calculators and computers. 6th-8th.
  • selects and uses appropriate instruments, technology, and techniques to measure quantities in order to achieve specified degrees of accuracy in a problem situation. 9th-12th.

  • uses the senses, tools, and instruments to obtain information from his or her surroundings. PreK-2nd.
  • knows that scientists and technologists use a variety of tools to obtain information in more detail and to make work easier. PreK-2nd.
  • undestands that people, alone or in groups, invent new tools to solve problems and do work that affects aspects of life outside of science. 3rd-5th.
  • knows that technological design should require taking into account constraints such as natural laws, the properties of the materials used, and economic, political, social, ethical, and aesthetic values. 6th-8th.
  • knows that computers speed up and extend people's ability to collect, sort, and analyze data; prepare research reports; and share data and ideas with others. 6th-8th.
  • knows that technology problems often create a demand for new scientific knowledge and that new technologies make it possible for scientists to extend their research in a way that advances science. 9th-12th.

  • understnads important technological developments and how they influenced human society. 6th-8th.
  • uses a variety of maps, geographic technologies including geographic information systems (GIS) and satellite-produced imagery, and other advanced graphic representations to depict geographic problems. 9th-12th.
  • understnads how cultural and technological characteristics can link or divide regions. 9th-12th.

Foreign Language
  • answers or formulates questions about a variety of media experiences produced in the target language (e.g., video, radio, television, songs, or computer programs). 3rd-5th.
  • conducts research on a topic of interest from an academic discipline (e.g., an event, a historical figure, or a scientific concept) using a variety of target-language sources (e.g., print, audio, and CD-ROM). 9th-12th.
  • uses target-language sources to obtain information (in person or via the Internet) about a hobby, sport, or topic of personal, community, or world interest. 9th-12th.
  • uses the target language to access, process, and discuss information that is only available through the target language or within the target culture (e.g., by using technology such as databases and CD-ROMs produced in the target language). 9th-12th.
