What items should you look for on your credit reports?

  • Carefully review all of the addresses listed on your credit report. Criminals may be using a different address to apply for credit with other financial institutions
  • Make sure no other names or social security numbers are affiliated with your credit report
  • Carefully review all inquiries to ensure no unauthorized inquires to your credit file have been made. If you have not requested credit with these creditors, notify them immediately.
  • Remember that inquiries appear right away and actual accounts may take up to 3 months to show up on your credit report.
  • Don't just look at the credit rating on each account because criminals may actually make payments on fraudulent accounts
  • Make sure that all accounts listed reflect the proper balances that you owe
  • If you notice anything that should not belong, notify the credit bureaus immediately to correct your credit file
  • Take responsibility for the accuracy of your credit history
