This course provides an introduction to Italian history in seminar format, utilizing on location the vast resources provided by the rich artistic and architectural treasures of Bergamo, Florence, Venice, Milan, and other cities. ITT 4932H--Honors Survey of Italian LiteratureBergamo, Italy

In this course we will explore Italian Literature of the period spanning from the unification of Italy (ca 1860), to the second half of the 20th century. From the ideal departure point represented by the birth of a nation, passing through the years of the world wars and of the Fascist regime, students will learn to identify currents, movements, authors and their works in their relationship with historical, social, and political events, as well as in their connection to other European artistic groups and currents. The socio-historical approach will be supported by readings (in translation) from an array of novels, short stories, and poetry.
