When Shane Hmiel burst on to the NASCAR Busch Grand National
Series circuit in 2002, it did not take very long for him to show everyone
that he had the talent to be in this series. Also, it was obvious that
his year in the Goody's Dash Series a year before had adequately prepared
him for the Busch Series. During his year in the Dash Series, Hmiel
collected two wins, with his first coming at the Darlington Raceway
in Darlington, S.C. on May 12, 2001. In addition to the two wins, he
racked up 13 top 10 finishes.
At the 2002 season-opening
GNC Live Well 300 at the Daytona International Speedway on
February 16, Shane finished in 5th place. Throughout the rest of the
season, this rookie would astonish many in the stands, as he won two
poles at the Nashville Superspeedway for the April 13, 2002 Pepsi
300, and also for the Busch 200 at the New Hampshire International
Speedway on May 11, 2002. The pole at Nashville was very remarkable,
as it was only Hmiel's 7th event of the year.
