Renewal Requirements and Additional Information for those
Students Who Did Not Meet the Renewal RequirementsThe Bright Futures Scholarship Programs include:
Florida Academic Scholarship (FLAS),
Florida Merit Scholarship (FLMR) and
Florida Gold Seal Scholarship (FLGS)
Renewal eligibility is an automatic process that occurs at the end of the spring term for those students who received funding during the current year. The institution(s) where you received funding reports your cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) and hours completed for the year to the Bureau of Student Financial Assistance of the Florida Department of Education in Tallahassee . Renewal students must earn the cumulative overall GPA and the required hours indicated below on all college coursework attempted, including high school dual enrollment and out-of-state coursework.
1. The overall GPA requirement for the FLAS is 3.0
NOTE: If the student’s overall GPA is less than 3.0 and equal to 2.75 or higher, the Bureau will automatically continue the student on the Florida Merit Scholarship Program.
The overall GPA requirement for the FLMR and the FLGS is 2.75.
- Must have successfully completed an average of at least 6 hours for each term for which they were funded the Bright Futures award for the previous year.
For example:
If a student was funded for one term, the total of earned hours would need to be 6 hours.
If a student was funded for two terms, the total of earned hours would need to be 12 hours.
If a student was funded for three terms, fall, spring and summer, the total of earned hours would still need to be only 12 hours since the third term which is the summer term will not be completed before the local institution is required to have their Grades and Hours Report filed with the Bureau.
NOTE: SUMMER GRADES AND HOURS earned after spring evaluation may be used if necessary to meet the scholarship renewal requirements.
As soon as the summer grades and/or summer transfer hours have been posted to a student’s records, students can complete the Bright Futures Request To Re-evaluate My Situation Form with our office. If the student meets the renewal requirements at the end of the summer term, we will send the updated Grades/Hours information to the Bureau for the student to be reinstated on the appropriate Bright Futures Scholarship Program.
Q. What If I Still Do Not Meet the Cumulative Overall GPA Renewal Requirement after the summer grades and hours are posted?
A. If you do not earn the required GPA by the end of the summer term you may apply for RESTORATION of the scholarship at the end of any spring or summer term if you have raised your GPA to the required renewal level.
NOTE: Restoration is a one time opportunity.
Q. What If I Still Do Not Meet the Required Hours after the summer grades and hours are posted?A. RESTORATION DOES NOT apply if you did not earn the hours required for renewal of the scholarship. This means that if a student does not earn the required hours by the end of the summer term and does not file a Scholarship Appeal Form indicated below that is approved, then that student can never get back on the Bright Futures Scholarship Program.
Q. What If I Did Not Meet The Scholarship Renewal Criteria Due To A Verifiable Illness Or Other Circumstance Beyond My Control?
A. If you do not meet the renewal cumulative GPA and /or required hours due to a verifiable illness or other emergency, you may file a SCHOLARSHIP APPEAL FORM with our office. The medical or emergency circumstances that affected the semester/s in question must be documented. You should provide as much documentation as possible regarding the illness or emergency to our office.
NOTE: A student may file this Scholarship Appeal any time after they have received the courtesy letter from our office indicating they did not meet the renewal requirements.
Official ineligibility notices are also mailed to students during the summer following spring evaluation of their renewal eligibility by the Bureau. If a student has not already filed a scholarship appeal with our office by that time, they must file this Scholarship Appeal within 30 days of the date of the ineligibility notice sent to them by the Bureau.
The Scholarship Appeal Form needs to be submitted by the end of the previous month in order for our Scholarship Committee which meets the second week of each month, to review it. You will be notified in writing in a timely manner of the decision of this committee.
