The Florida Education and Employment Council for Women and Girls was established in May 1989 for the purpose of advising the Commissioner of Education on all equity matters pertaining to the education and employment of women and girls. Changes in the economic status of women and the increasing number of women in the workplace make it imperative that expanded education and training opportunities for women and girls be made available. The workforce needs of Florida as it moves into the year 2000 will be met in large part by females. Therefore, it is necessary to address the preparation of these workers for the future of the State of Florida. The Council is composed of concerned citizens representing a broad range of categories including business, industry, trade associations, public agencies, advisory groups and educational institutions. They are committed to the concept that quality education resulting in full participation in the workforce by women and girls is essential to Florida's competitiveness into the year 2000. Each year the Council presents an annual report to the Commissioner which includes recommendations on issues affecting women and girls in education and employment. |

The Council endeavors to develop a public consciousness of the talents of women regardless of age, race, color, creed, or handicapping condition with special emphasis on utilization of these talents as equal partners in the private, business and civic communities; to encourage women and girls to become actively involved in education and training programs leading to high wage occupations; to support women in taking leadership roles; to act as a source of information to women including, but not limited to, employment opportunities, education and training programs and legal rights to combat discrimination against women in the workplace. |

To encourage the educational system to provide occupational training for women and girls that meets the needs of business and industry. To insure that the educational and occupational programs provide for economic self-sufficiency for women and girls. To raise public consciousness of the role of women workers and their value to Florida's vitality. To identify programs and services that reduce or eliminate educational and employment barriers, thus increasing opportunities for successful employment. |
