In order to meet the needs of all of the English Education majors, it is imperative that you contact me during office hours. These hours are posted outside my office door as well as on my voice mail. To receive the most precise and timely advice, it is important to have already prepared possible course choices and possible schedules prior to your meeting with me. Your SASS/Audit form (available in EDU 109) is also of equal importance in the advising process, and I will require you to have it with you. I have provided links to the catalog requirements for this degree program.
LAE 4360 English Instructional Analysis
This course must be taken in the same semester as the Junior Year
Student Teach. The only other people admitted into the course are those enrolled in the
Alternative Certification program. Without meeting these criteria, admission will be
denied by the instructor.
LAE 4342 Teaching Language and Composition
Prerequisite: EDG 4321. It is under strong recommendation that
this course be taken along with LAE 4360 English Instructional Analysis and the Junior
Year Student Teach. The emphasis of the course work is placed on writing and the
principles of its teaching, and many of the activities work more effectively when they are
implemented during the internship experience.
LAE 4464/5465 Survey of Adolescent Literature
Ideally, this is the first class both graduate and undergraduate
English Education majors should take, because it is the foundation on which the other
courses are based. It requires a tremendous amount of reading, and it is a heavy course
load to complete if paired with LAE 4360 or LAE 4342.
LAE 4361/5337 Literacy Strategies for Middle/High School Students
Most undergraduates decide to leave this course
for last, and pair it with their Senior Year Student Teach. But, it is sometimes difficult
for Senior interns to work on an in-depth case study, due to time constraints. This class
may be taken at any time during the Junior or Senior year.
