Survey Course Advisory Committee
Persons present: Paul Blais-VCC, Bill Bozeman-UCF/CoEd, Kay Delk-SCC, Jacques Dubois- BCC, Pete Miniscalco-DBCC/WCEU, Lucy Morse-CFCHE, Steve Sorg-CFCHE, Barbara Truman-CFCHE, Phil Wallace-BCC, Angela Williams-SCC
Dubois opened the meeting at 10:15 am and passed out a handout from the American Council on Education and the Alliance: An Association for Alternative Degree Programs for Adults. He said this information was helpful for understanding the platform from which distance education was evolving.
Dubois then discussed the two-part survey that was distributed to the case study heroes identified for inclusion in the video. He also distributed a brochure for the January 5th in-service workshop to be held at Brevard. The workshop is the fourth annual "Celebrating Teaching Excellence" and will have the theme "Focusing the Power of Technology."
Committee members were asked to report on the progress of the survey of heroes at each institution. Paul Blais said that Valencia had nursing faculty who used Powerpoint for technology enhancement. He said that interactive video was being used in a lab environment and also for teaching Music Appreciation. Portuguese was also being videotaped within the Foreign Language Department.
Angela Williams and Kay Delk said that they initially started with 12 candidates for heroes at Seminole, but were down to seven. Their candidates were using mostly technology in the classroom with some Internet. Biology and Physical Science were using simulations especially the anatomy CD-ROM called ADAM. Research on the Internet for extra credit is offered as well as the Robitel. Some Fine Arts classes are using Photoshop on the Mac. In the spring, SCC plans to install NetBlazer so that Faculty can work off their office computers from home and check their cc-mail.
Pete Miniscalco said that five campuses are linked interactively for specific use of synchronous distance education. Pete also said they Daytona faculty were involved with Mainline High School who had worked with Kodak to put their yearbook on CD-ROM. Other uses of technology enhancements include the disciplines of Nursing, Computer Engineering Technology, Astronomy, and Math.
Pat Fleming reported on Central Florida Community College where they are using workstations to research the Internet, holding distance learning demonstrations including the active involvement of faculty and administrators.
At UCF, the surveys were sent out during the second week of December. Many participants requested additional time to participate. Approximately 12 people were identified and about eight plan to participate. Faculty chosen included the world renowned Chases, a husband and wife team who had traveled around the Yucatan Peninsula to teach archeology. It was suggested that Bill Patterson and Kent Hopkins of UCF's College of Business Administration be included.
Dubois said that the only technology not used was compressed video. Brevard would try to round out any areas that were not heavily used. At Brevard they have Smart Classrooms and a 360 degree theater style classroom. Other technology includes a bulletin board and using the Web through America On-Line.
Morse said that all deliverables must be completed by no later than May 8th.
The next meeting will be Thursday, January 25th from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm in room 100 of the
UCF Research Pavillion.
