Meeting Notes
March 19, 1996

Persons present: Steve Sorg-CFCHE, Bobbi Lytle-SCC, Paul Blais-VCC, John Bober-BCC, Bill Patterson-UCF, Terry Furlow-L-SCC, Barbara Truman-CFCHE, Scott Reed-DBCC, Marlene Fleischer-DBCC

Patterson opened the meeting at 1:12 pm. He discussed the objectives of the group and explained the importance of sending in deliverables for the final report by the May 10th deadline.

Patterson distributed copies of the faculty technology profiles (FTPs) and explained their use as a broad brushstroke to find out faculty's wish lists. The FTPs will be part of the deliverables and each college needs to have a target of 5-10 faculty members involved. Patterson cited the University of Wisconsin which uses the rule of thumb: one instructional technologist to every seven faculty members. Bober suggested making the FTPs a CGI scripted Web-based form.

Patterson then distributed the Faculty Development Advisory Committee's needs assessment data. He asked members to read and discuss this data at the next meeting. This data should be built into the deliverables. Patterson also asked for copies of workshop/seminar materials to be included in the campus packages. Sorg asked that numbers of faculty served be included along with these materials. The data will be used to assess needs and priorities. Campus newsletters and Web pages are all examples of initiatives that should be included.

Pat Fleming said at CFCC that 110 faculty surveys were sent out and 58 responded. He hopes to use the data for initiatives in the faculty senate to get distance learning as an integral part of the strategic plan.

The question arose about what the state will do with all the grant deliverables. Fleischer was concerned about communications to keep up with what is happening on the entire grant. She suggested that e-mail messages and faxes be sent out with global updates on the activities of the committees. At other campuses, grant participants have formed their own committees to share and keep up with information. Patterson said there is no substitute for intracampus information.

Patterson asked members about the idea of having an HTML workshop at UCF or having each of the members having an account to participate. If it were at UCF, it would have to be very generic. Fleming said they have not had enough done on the Web yet. Fleischer suggested having an event at DBCC with an uplink which could involve the governor. The heroes of the course could be there in person to answer questions when their video clips are run. The event could showcase the product. Fleming said that the Sprint workshop showed that edu-marketing was an issue needed to be done. The questions to stage such an event would be the dollar bills involved, scheduling availability and production values. Marlene volunteered to look into it. Members agreed that the event could recorded, distributed and promoted.

The group then took a tour of DBCC's facilities.

The next meeting will be 1:00 pm, April 15th at Valencia's East campus.
