Instructional Technologists
Persons present: John Bober-BCC, Pat Fleming-CFCC,Terry Furlow-L-SCC, Terry Longordo- L-SCC, Bobbi Lytle-SCC, Bill Patterson-CFCHE and Barbara Truman-CFCHE
Bill Patterson opened the meeting at 1:20 pm and welcomed everyone. Patterson introduced himself and explained his hopes that meetings such as this one would provide the means to promote relationships after the distance learning demonstration project is finished. He passed around the Connections booklet form the UCF College of Education's Instructional Technology Resource Center. The booklet described several workshops that Bill has been involved in. Patterson also described his involvement with Microsoft Corporation. He recently returned from speakers training. Patterson was also selected to write the activity guides for the Microsoft Composer series. Locally, he has been creating a relationship with Time Warner Cable and hopes to have a future meeting there.
Patterson asked each IT to introduce themselves. Paul Blaise from Valencia could not attend and Daytona Beach has hired someone who will come on line in January.
Patterson requested that each IT send in a monthly status report to him to report on progress. He passed around his goals and objectives and asked for revisions. Members discussed each point and agreed on the value to their campuses and to the Consortium. The only change made was to the timetable to reflect the delay in hiring ITs at each campus.
Next, the colleges reported on their activities. Bobbi Lytle said at Seminole that she is conducting several workshops in a specific area created for this purpose on the bottom floor of the library. Seminole has also decided to contract with the University of Winconsin to receive their videotapes for a guide to designing distance learning programs. Lytle also plans to create their own college-wide distance learning newsletter.
Terry Longordo introduced Terry Furlow as the hired Instructional Technologist for Lake-Sumter and was hired from within. He had previously worked in the computer labs and knows many of the faculty.
John Bober reported on what's happening at Brevard. Courses are being offered through America On-Line and surprisingly local students are taking classes to graduate sooner. Twenty courses are currently available on-line. Bober also showed Brevard's video for registration that is broadcast and kept in the library. Brevard also has the Titan Bulletin Board service which Bober created, using First Class software. He said they hope to have support CDs to use by the end of January.
Pat Fleming of Central Florida reported on a recent demonstration of distance learning involving their President and the World Wide Web. They have also published their newsletter and are attempting to make a complete computer hardware/software inventory. CFCC is working with FDLN for the community colleges. Ten telecourses are presently being offered by CFCC.
All the instructional technologists were asked to do an inventory of distance learning course offered on their campuses and report it back to Lucy Morse.
The next meeting of the Instructional Technologists will be Monday, January 8th at Brevard
Community College. Members are requested to meet at 1:00 pm at the Cocoa TV station.
