Moskal opened the meeting at 2:12 pm and asked for members' reactions to the Faculty Development Workshop held on October 17th at Seminole Community College. The response was very positive from both committee members and from the returned evaluations. Several people reported that faculty on their campuses would have liked to attend, but could not. Another workshop will be tentatively scheduled for November 14th and will be identical to the first workshop. The second workshop will be pushed back until the spring term. CFCC has volunteered to be one of the host sites.
Discussion continued on the specifics of the workshop. Moskal distributed the aggregate data. The overall objective was questioned and reiterated. Martin said the two objectives were to plan for interaction and provide practice and feedback. The suggestion was made to include body language, tone of voice to give people things that they can specifically take back and do. The interactive study guides (ISG) were both liked and disliked. They were like for the job aids that were in them and they were disliked by some for the fill in the blanks. Hands on activities would have been appreciated, but Martin said that the second workshop would have more hands on activities. Other suggestions were to do a pretest and have faculty members write objectives. Moskal summarized the discussion by saying that in future workshops, the ISG would be explained, the participants may be given a pre-test and the advertisement would be altered to show who the workshop is designed for.
Steve Sorg reported on the budget progress. He said five community colleges had funds encumbered, but it was unclear how long it would take to make the dollars flow. In a recent meeting with the powers that be at UCF, Ed Neighbor volunteered to call the community colleges and explain the situation.
Regarding the faculty surveys, about 300 were collected and the data is being tabulated. More details will follow at a future committee meeting.
Lucy Morse described an upcoming Learner Support workshop scheduled for the end of January. This workshop would have participants from various administrative and support areas of each campus.
The need for incentives for faculty arose again. The University of Maine is known for materials describing their lessons learned. An upcoming teleconference from the University of Wisconsin is about Quality in Distance Education. That date will be published on the Consortium homepage.
The next meeting will be Tuesday, November 11th from 2-4 pm in Room 100 of the UCF Research Pavillion.
The meeting adjourned at 3:15 pm.
