Faculty Development Advisory Committee
Persons present: John Bober-BCC, Pat Fleming-CFCC, Bobbi Lytle-SCC, Bill Patterson UCF/CFCHE, Lucy Morse-CFCHE, Steve Sorg-CFCHE, Barbara Truman-CFCHE
Patterson opened the meeting at 1:30 pm and raised the question of having workshops on creating Web pages for all the campuses. John Bober said that BCC is making a half hour videotape that will discuss shareware and using templates. The video tape will be aired on BCC's TV station. They hope to have it ready for Spring. Discussion followed on the value of giving faculty instruction where they will have no outlet. A suggestion was made to create pages off-line, then upload them when the capability exists later.
The possibility of setting up guest accounts were discussed for conducting hands-on workshops for faculty. Concerning campus Web server capabilities, Paul Blais said he has an account with a commercial service provider, Sundial. For $17 per month he gets unlimited time and he has 5 megabytes for his Web page. Continuing education credits was suggested to be given as an incentive for faculty to attend workshops.
Other workshops already given at UCF, have been full day events using Hyperstudio (Windows). Participants have been given Web sites to visit and handouts. A counter suggestion was made to have workshops that covered the technology and have handouts for specific disciplines.
Patterson suggested demonstrating Microsoft Encarta as a means for faculty to explore multimedia. Pat Fleming said that CFCC signed up for the Microsoft Partnership which will include a two week training in Colorado. Bober said that BCC had just gotten their CD Jukebox online. The server is Windows NT and uses First Class software, graphical interface. Local telecourse students will be able to dial up at 2400 baud rate with six modem lines to use the six CD-ROMs.
Pat Fleming distributed his CFCC newsletter. He also said a technology committee had been established. The faculty development survey will be used in workshops. Bobbi Lytle said that SCC had just upgraded computer labs. Requests were made for copies of the videotapes of Faculty Development Workshops as soon as available.
The next meeting will be 1:00 pm on February 12th at Central Florida Community College.
Participants then went on the tour of BCC's television and distance learning facilities.
