Associate
Chair, 2005-2007
I coordinated the department's M.A. programs (recruitment, scheduling, admissions, orientations, fellowships/assistantships, exams, budget, staff), assisted the department chair with some routine tasks (e.g., observations), and worked with the interim associate director of the University Writing Center.
Director,
University Writing Center, 1997-2007
I
established a new writing center to support
writing across the curriculum at the University
of Central Florida (a Doctoral/Research Intensive university of
41,000+ students). To accomplish this goal, I coordinated facility set-up
and outreach to the wider campus, and hired and trained a staff (a full-time
office assistant, and part-time graduate and undergraduate student peer
writing consultants). In 1999, the UWC was awarded a "university
special" (local grant) to expand services to graduate students
in all disciplines. Other administrative accomplishments include designing
policy and procedures, developing a website that includes an interactive
appointment scheduler, carrying out assessment, and managing the budget.
Other pedagogical accomplishments include creating special topic workshops,
writing pedagogical materials (including a Writing Consultant Manual,
soon to be transformed into a wiki), and teaching a graduate-level course
for peer consultant training.
Current
highlights:
-
Staff:
Two full-time (one visiting instructor, one office assistant) and
25-50 part-time (mostly OPS, GTAs, work-study; one part-time instructor)
providing more than 175 contact hours/week.
-
Budget:
$162,000 (E&G $150,000; auxiliary $2000; current partnerships
approximately $10,000)
-
Use:
In 2001-2002, UWC logged 8,691 consultations from 417 courses in
46 departments representing every college at UCF, at every level
from first-year composition to doctoral dissertations, including
out-of-class writing such as scholarship application essays.
-
Assessment:
The UWC is associated with better academic performance and persistence
at UCF.
Director, Rhetoric/Composition M.A., 2004-2005
