Because the UCF-Brevard Campus is committed to equal opportunity for students with special needs, UCF-Brevard students with disabilities which require accommodations need to do the following to receive services:
Appointment, Written Documentation and Interview
Once a student has been admitted to UCF-Brevard, the student must contact the UCF-Brevard Director of Student Affairs to request services to accommodate a disability. The student must make an appointment with the Director and bring the appropriate written documentation of the disability. To call for an appointment, telephone the UCF-Brevard Student Affairs Office at 407-632-1111 (ext 65566 or 65555). The disability information will be kept confidential and will be used for the sole purpose of aiding the student to achieve the academic goals at the University. The student is strongly encouraged to start preparing as early as possible as some accommodations may require significant planning in advance of the semester.
At the interview, the Director and the student will discuss the student’s special needs. The Director will explain the accommodations that will be available based on the student’s disability and appropriate documentation. At the UCF-Brevard Campus, all syllabi of courses will be requested from the student to be placed in the student’s file to assist with testing needs throughout the semester.
If the student is a client of a rehabilitation agency such as Vocational Rehabilitation, Blind Services or Veteran’s Administration Vocational Rehabilitation, then any services the student needs must be coordinated with the services of the student’s rehabilitation agency. Again, the student is strongly encouraged to start preparing as early as possible as some accommodations may require significant planning in advance of the semester.
The Brevard Student Affairs Office provides special testing for course tests when necessary to accommodate students’ disabilities. Disabilities which may require special testing include, but are not limited to, visual impairments, specific learning disabilities, and manual dexterity impairments. Appropriate accommodations may include, but are not limited to, extra time, a reader, enlarged print, a writer, and a separate testing room.
To arrange for special testing:
If a professor has questions regarding testing accommodations for any student with a disability, the faculty member may telephone the Director at extension 65566 (or from Orlando at 50-6-5566). If a faculty member requests written documentation regarding the student’s disability, the student must come to the Brevard Student Affairs Office and sign a "Letter Request Form." The professor then will be sent a letter stating the appropriate accommodations for the particular student in question.
A special computer is in the joint use Brevard Community College and the UCF-Brevard Computer Lab (Clark Maxwell Jr Lifelong Learning Center, Room 184). The computer that is reserved for students with disabilities is a Dell Optiplex GL 5100 with a 21-inch monitor. Students with disabilities can borrow a track ball and headphone set, if needed from the Brevard Student Affairs Office. This computer has Zoomtext for large print displayed on the monitor and JAWS for speech output with a Dectalk speech synthesizer. This computer can be used to access all computer programs available to UCF-Brevard students.
The Brevard Student Affairs Office has The Reading Edge (reading machine). It is located in room 231 of the Clark Maxwell Jr Lifelong Learning Center. The joint use Library also has The Reading Edge and an Optelec 20-20+ (video magnification machine) in the second floor media area. All three machines are available on first come, first serve basis.
For a student to use the disabled parking spaces on the UCF-Brevard Campus, the student needs a state of Florida Disabled Parking Permit and a Brevard Community College parking decal. The student can obtain a state of Florida Disabled Parking Permit from an office, which sells Florida motor vehicle license, plates. To obtain a Brevard Community College parking decal, the student must stop by suite 147 of the Clark Maxwell Jr Lifelong Learning Center and talk to a Property manager to receive a free parking decal.
It is the UCF-Brevard student’s responsibility to request accommodations and work with the Brevard Student Affairs staff. We are located in the Clark Maxwell Jr Lifelong Learning Center, Room 231 at the UCF-Brevard Campus. Our office telephone numbers are 407-632-1111 (ext 65566 or 65555).
