Bernard McCarthy is Professor of Criminal Justice at the University of Central Florida. He previously taught at Jacksonville State University and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He received his PhD in Criminology from the Florida State University and a Master’s in Criminal Justice from the State University of New York in Albany. He also worked for several years for the New York State Department of Corrections as a program research specialist.

His research interests focus on the impact of policy changes on criminal justice operations and program evaluation. He is particularly interested in examining the divergence between intended and unintended consequences of criminal justice policy innovations. Recently he has been examining the impact of homeland security initiatives on criminal justice policy.

He teaches both graduate and undergraduate students. From an instructional perspective one of his major goals is to provide students with a deeper understanding of the structure and operation of the criminal justice system and the forces that shape policy in a democratic society. He engages his students in the subject material through the use of research projects, case studies and class presentations.

In addition, all of his classes include an exposure to the research methodology used in the field and the latest research findings. His classes are interactive and students are challenged to get actively involved in the learning process. Most recently he developed a service learning course for graduate students.

Outside of work he has been heavily involved in sports, mostly coaching, but in the last few years has run several marathons and triathlons. His children, Matt and Megan, played baseball and softball through college and his son Matthew was drafted to play professional baseball by the Anaheim Angels. He is now a student at Harvard Medical School.

His daughter graduated from Middlebury College, was named to the NESCAC Softball All Conference and All Academic Team and is employed as a consultant in Washington, DC.

His partner in life and colleague is Belinda R. McCarthy. They reside in Winter Springs, Florida with their three dogs: lumpy, stumpy and grumpy….
