How to retrieve IRS Tax Forms from the Internet

The internet address for federal tax forms is:

Once you reach the address, select .pdf for your file format if you have an Adobe Acrobat reader. Select .pcl for your file format if you do not have an Adobe Acrobat reader. (The location provides instructions for downloading an Adobe Acrobat reader if you do not have one.)

Instruction for retrieving forms without an Adobe Acrobat reader:

Scroll down the list of over 500 forms and instructions, mark the desired form by clicking the mouse, and then press the review selected file button that is below the list. Note that there are two scroll bars on the page. The forms and instructions have their own scroll bar.

Save the retrieved file by placing the cursor on the address (underscored blue text that contains at its end your form number) and clicking the mouse.

When the save as box appears, select the drive and directory in which you wish to save the file. If you are using the Magruder lab, you should save to a disk in the A drive. (Scroll down under drive to select the A drive.) It will suggest a file name using the format Fxxxx.exe. where xxxx stands for the form number. Thus, for Form 1040, the file name is F1040.exe.

The remaining instructions assume that you retrieved Form 1040, and saved it on a disk in the A drive using the prompted file name.

Next, change to program manager and press the MS-DOS icon. Then type A: to change to the A prompt.

Assuming you retrieved Form 1040 type F1040.exe.

Next type copy /b F1040.pcl lpt1. The last four character denote the printer port and are letters LPT followed by number one. This assumes that your printer is connected to printer port 1. If not, follow the instructions on the screen.

To retrieve instructions, the steps are identical except that an I is used instead of an F in the file names.
