Work in Progress

1) A Benefit Incidence Analysis of Public Expenditures in Ecuador

Using large scale household survey data, in this project I will evaluate the net benefit of public expenditures on household at the lowest level of the income distribution.

2) Race and Ethnic Inequality in Health and Health Care in Latin America

Using the SABE dataset I will analyze if there is any differences in health among ethnic groups after controlling for relevant socio-economic covariates. The analysis will use comparable data for Argentina, Barbados, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Mexico and Uruguay.

3) Marital History and the Rate of Health Deterioration among the Elderly: Evidence from Four Latin American Countries

To effectively integrate policy options for the elderly, a better understanding of the economic and non-economic determinants of seniors’ health is needed. Special attention must be paid to life histories, since events that spread over the life course affect health in old age. One important question is whether and how marriage affects the onset of illness and the speed at which health declines. That is to say, it is of particular importance to identify the direct and indirect channels through which current and past marital status may impact the deterioration of health capital during the elderly years. In this research, I will explore how non-economic variables, and in particular the marital status and marital history of each individual, influence the health and the gradient of health deterioration among the elderly.
