Day

Assignment

  Monday:

Acquiring

and

Classifying Data

Begin a folder for this section.  Using the following sources and any books or pamphlets in the library section of the room, find the dimensions of the items in the list below.  For the buildings, you will also need to know their unique properties, their intended uses and any other information that will enable you to show the differences and similarities between them.

  1. The Pyramid at Kahfre
  2. The Great Pyramid
  3. The Castle or the Pyramid of Kukulkan at Chichen Itza
  4. Your favorite make and model of car (use height, width and length)
  5. Your bedroom
  6. A 12 oz Soda Can
  7. Any type of Sports Ball (must include the sport it  is used for)

You will need sufficient information to be able to compute the volume of the item and will also need the individual physical measurements to aid your computations.

Record your findings in a well organized table.  The table may be created by hand, or in a spreadsheet program.  Be sure to list references for any information that you find on the web or in books.

Due Wednesday at the beginning of class

  Tuesday:

Egyptian Multiplication  and Hieroglyphics

Add to your folder the worksheet handout for Egyptian Multiplication.  Complete the worksheet using the method described on the following webpage.  Show your work and explain your answers.

Symbols and the study of the patterns that are used have a very close relationship with mathematics.  Recognizing patterns of words such as "a", "I", and "the" can help us to break codes.  See if you can break the code on your worksheets.  There is help and information on these webpages.

Due Completed assignment will be included in you folder and turned in on September 11.

  Wednesday:

Volumes

and

Areas

Using the measurements that you collected on Monday, extend the chart you created to include the following for each applicable shape:

*     Compute the height of each object if it was not a given measurement

*     Areas of all surfaces

*     Volume of each item

Create a second chart of all of the values, including those above and convert all of the measurements to metric form.

Due Completed assignment will be included in you folder and turned in on September 11.

  Thursday:

How

Many

Would It Take?

The pyramids of Egypt are immense structures created from thousands of blocks of solid granite.  Using the information from your chart determine how many of each of your other items it would require to occupy the same volume as the Pyramid at Kahfre.  (Do not be concerned about shape, just volume.)  Find the following information:

*     A simplified ratio of the size of the pyramid to one of each of the objects.

*     The percentage of the size of each object as compared to the pyramid in both standard and metric measures and compare the results.

*     How many of each item it would take to fill the pyramid.

Present your information in an organized manner that is clearly labeled.

Due Completed assignment will be included in you folder and turned in on September 11.

  Friday:

Modeling

Using the PBS website below for a pattern, create a scale model of the Pyramid at Kahfre.  Make your scale 30:1.  Feel free to use any medium you like.  A paper model is perfectly acceptable.
