Darty EUH 2000.05 Exam Tips

General Information:
All answers for exams will be recorded in blue books. You do not need scantrons. Make sure you properly number all questions on the exam to clearly indicate which questions you are answering. Each exam is 100 points.

Use the exam terms provided at the completion of each chapter segment to create a study guide. I suggest using notecards or a table format to organize your material. On notecards, put the term on one side and the explanation on the other. In a table, list all terms in the left column and, in the corresponding right column, list the explanation. In either case, remember to study the terms both ways--i.e. know what explanation accompanies it but also be able to put the term with a description.

The short answer and identification terms on the exam will come only from the term list provided. However, the essays will likely include further information than just the terms on the term list so you will need to study and prepare essays in according to its specific questions.

Part One: Short Answer 30 points total (2 points each)

Select fifteen of twenty-five questions, and provide brief (usually one or two word) answers.

Example One:
Q: Name the explorer most recognized as the first to discover the New World in the 1400s. (first and last name for full credit)
A: Christopher Columbus

Example Two:
Q: This battle was fought between Allied and Axis forces in WWII on the shores of France, June 6, 1944. What was this battle?
A: Normandy/D-Day

Example Three:
Q: A form of commerce in which a mother country established trade with colonies, and regulates products, prices, and profits--commonly used from 1500-1800.
A: Mercantilism

Part Two: Identifications 20 points (5 points each)

Select four of ten terms, and write an identification. There are various ways that these can be written though I do have a general description and understanding that I look for when grading.

Think of the ID in two parts.
The first part (a) is the description of who, what, how, where, and when. This is your means of identifying the term in the right context.
The second part (b) is the explanation or the significance of the term. For example, you'd say what its impact was or that it was example of some idea.

Example: Christopher Columbus

Christopher Columbus was a fifteenth century explorer who was employed by Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of Spain to seek a route to the Indies. He succeeded in locating several islands in the Caribbean, such as Hispaniola and Cuba, that he claimed for Spain. As a result, the New World was opened to further European exploration and development as colonies which changed the balance of power in Europe as well as in the Americas.
Part II: Essay 50 points

Select one of three essays. These essay topics are taken directly from the review sheet and are usually posted on-line seven to ten days before the exam. Thus, study at least three, and one of the three you select is guaranteed to be on the exam.

You must develop your answers and explain all your examples. Typically, most students lay out their essays in five-paragraph format. You MUST have an introduction and a conclusion, with appropriate body paragraphs to explain your essay. If you do not have an introduction or conclusion, you will be penalized five points for each that is missing.

I suggest making an outline with your major points and examples to study for the essays. Your organization will already be planned out, and it will help you to study the material. As always, if you need assistance or have questions, please ask me for help.
