Darty EUH 2000 Term Paper Checklist

Checklist for Term Paper:

Grammar and Style to Check and Edit:
Check all spelling, by reading as well as using spell checker
Check all grammar, by reading as well as using grammar checker
Does the organization of your paper make sense? Have you discussed like ideas together-avoid disjointed discussion of your points.
No contractions (Example: DO NOT USE "didn't", USE "did not")
No slang (DO NOT USE terms like kids, gonna, etc., USE children, going to, etc.)
No personal pronouns (third person only so DO NOT USE terms like I, we, us, you, my, me, our, etc.)
Watch use of "its" to make sure you as using it correctly (this is the proper term for possessive it, as in "Orlando has its elections in November.", and should never have an apostrophe)
Avoid shifting tenses within a paragraph, for the most part your entire paper should use past tense
Check verb agreement within sentences, most common problems are plural and singular agreement
Check for appropriate use of commas, particularly in compound sentences or sentences which start with a prepositional phrase
Check for run-on sentences and overlong or wordy sentences-sometimes it is better to simplify your ideas into smaller components rather than trying to cram everything into one sentence
  Write out numbers under 100
If using statistical data in your discussion, should be written like this: "50 percent" (NOT 50%)
Write out eras such as "eighteenth century" (DO NOT USE 18th C or 18th century)
Eras as a whole do not have apostrophes, write as 1800s or 1860s etc; if using as a possessive then "1800s' people"
Make sure you have documented all information and sources used using the proper format of footnotes or endnotes-if necessary, go back and insert additional citations where needed
Have you kept direct quotes to a minimum?-a paper of about six pages or so should not have more than about three or four direct quotes, most everything should be in your own words (you still cite and document for either case when you use information from a source directly or indirectly)
If using a long quote of over four lines (generally there should be no more than one or two of this type in any paper), have you used the correct format? Check Rampolla for assistance if needed.
When first introducing a past or present historical figure, did you use his or her complete name? Thereafter, the person's last name or commonly used name can be used.
Check for transitions from one area of discussion to another, avoid "information dumping"

Paper Requirements:
  Typed
Double Spaced, except where needed in notes and longer quotes
  10-12 point font only
Times New Roman, Arial, or Typeface font only
Maximum 1 inch margins on all sides
Page numbers (upper right, lower right, or lower center), starts on first text page and continues through all pages including endnotes page (if have one) and bibliography page
Staple (upper left corner-Please do not use folders, binders, etcetera)
Minimum six full pages (text only included-footnote or endnote citations, bibliography, and cover sheet do not count toward page total)
Footnotes or endnotes as in-text citations:
o NO parenthetical citations allowed-This means that you should not, under any circumstances, put source information in parentheses at the end of a sentence.).
o Must use Rampolla reference Ch.5 on notes.
o Citations must be indicated by an Arabic or Roman numeral within the text-number always appears after ALL punctuation in the sentence is complete.
o These citations stand alone--that means that you do not link it with your bibliography using a number listing. Rather, each in-text citation has its own number, even if you reuse the same source or page number from a source. For example, if your paper has 40 citations, then they will be numbered in increasing numerical order from 1 to 40 until all notes are completed. So no in-text numbers will be repeated for your citations.
5 minimum sources, textbook and in-class notes do not count toward minimum.
o Only one of the minimum five can be a web-only source.
o Each of the minimum five sources must be directly used in your paper (whether quoting or paraphrasing-in either case, each instance must be cited)
