Continuing Education Committee Survey

Questions #3 & #4

The detailed analyses for questions 3 and 4 ("What courses/workshops would you like to see offered for librarians?" and "What courses/workshops would you like to see offered for support staff?", respectively) are found on charts linked at the following pages (also listed at the end of this page):

In order to fully understand the data, however, the two charts require a legend.   For maximum legibility of the charts, the legend for each is on this page and not with the charts themselves.

The chart design is the same for each of the two questions and an explanation of each column heading follows:

CFLC CE Total

CFLC CE %

CFLC CE Ranking

FLA Ranking

The subject list is a combination of topics suggested by CFLC survey respondents and by those responding to an earlier Florida Library Association (FLA) Survey. It is both hiearchical and alphabetic, in that it is alphabetically arranged by broad category and the broad categories have sub-topics listed below them (e.g., Circulation is listed alphabetically, but Reserves is listed hiearchically under Circulation).  In that list, the following conventions are observed:

  • Normal type is used for those major categories (e.g., Cataloging rather than Authority work) that were suggested as responses in both surveys.  It is also used for all sub-categories suggested in the CFLC survey.
  • Categories listed with strikethroughs (e.g., Abstracting) are topics that were suggested in the FLA Survey but not in the CFLC survey.  They have been retained to compare results and track trends.
  • Those categories listed in bold (e.g., Internet & WWW) are the hierarchically highest level topics that were suggested by CFLC survey respondents that had not appeared in the earlier FLA survey.
  • Specific Category Total is the number of times a given topic was suggested by CFLC survey respondents.  With the exception of the topics listed with strikethroughs, every topic listed was suggested at least once.

CFLC CE Total is the count of how many times a hierarchically higher category was suggested.  For example, MARC Basics (suggested once in question 4) would be a sub-category to MARC (suggested three times in question 4), so the "CFLC CE Total" for MARC would be 4, and that total would then in turn be included in the "CFLC CE Total" for Cataloging, MARC's hiearchically higher category.  No topic is included in this count unless it is a category unto itself or it has sub-categories.

CFLC CE % gives the percentage of the total responses that mentioned a subject.  As with the CFLC CE Total category, only those categories which are top-level or which have sub-categories are included.

CFLC CE Ranking shows the rank order (listed in the broader analysis of each question) for each of the topics included in the CFLC CE Total and CFLC CE % columns.

FLA % comes from Marilyn Mulla's "Continuing Education Needs Survey Results," Florida Libraries 36(6): 106,08,10,12,13 June/July, 1993.  There were 777 responses to that Florida Library Association Continuing Education Committee survey from across the state.  When asked "What subject matter would you like to have covered in a continuing education program?", the results yielded 38 broad categories.

FLA Ranking is from the same article as above.
