M.S.C.E. student Reza Akhavian was nominated by
the College of Engineering and Computer Science to receive the UCF
Order of Pegasus Award, which recognizes exemplary performance by
students in the areas of academic achievement, outstanding university
involvement, leadership, and community service. The Order of Pegasus
is the most prestigious and significant student award that can be
attained at the University.

Dr. Andrew Yun (Assistant
Professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Construction
Engineering) was the guest speaker of "Civil Engineering Measurements"
class. His talk was titled "State-of-the-Art Monitoring Technologies
for Civil Infrastructure Systems". He discussed several techniques
from interdisciplinary fields including structural dynamics, smart
sensing, data communication, and advanced data processing algorithms.
Examples of field and laboratory validation tests on full-scale
nonlinear viscous dampers, suspension bridges, retaining walls,
slopes, and tunnels subjected to different loading conditions and
long-term environmental effects were also presented.

UCF Chapter ranked 11th in the 2010 ASCE/AISC
Student Steel Bridge Competition at Purdue University: University of Central
Florida's Student Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)
was listed among top competitors in several categories. Competing
against 45 teams from U.S., Canada, China, and Puerto Rico, UCF was
placed at 25 in construction speed, 10 in lightness, 20 in display, 8
in stiffness, 21 in economy, 8 in efficiency, and 11 in overall
performance.

UCF Chapter Wins Big in ASCE Southeastern
Competitions: University of Central
Florida's Student Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)
sweeps prizes at the 2010 Southeastern Conference at Auburn
University, AL. Among other prizes
and recognitions, UCF wins the first prize in steel bridge
competition, third prize in concrete canoe competition, and second
prize for overall performance. With this win, the UCF steel bridge
team advances to the ASCE national competitions which will take place
at Purdue University (West Lafayette, IN) in May 2010.

CGN3501 (Civil Engineering Materials) class
visited the CEMEX local concrete production plant in Winter Park, FL.
CEMEX is a global building materials company that provides products

produces, distributes, and markets cement, ready-mix concrete,
aggregates, and related building materials in more than 50 countries.

Two MIT students put together a low-budget rig
to fly a $150 camera high enough to photograph the curvature of the
Earth. Instead of rockets, boosters and expensive control systems,
they filled a weather balloon with helium and hung a Styrofoam beer
cooler underneath to carry a cheap Canon A470 compact camera. Instant
hand warmers kept things from freezing up and made sure the batteries
stayed warm enough to work.

space shuttle. Now she's the first UCF graduate to fly on a NASA
mission.
