Migrating From PROFS (Office Vision) To Pegasus
With the advent of UCF's new electronic mail server, Pegasus, many users
are considering a migration from using PROFS (Office Vision) on the IBM
ES/9000 mainframe to using Pine on Pegasus. The purpose of this memo is
to help you determine if Pine is right for your needs.
PROFS verses Pegasus
If you are thinking about moving from PROFS to Pegasus, there are a
few things you need to consider:
- You must have a TCP/IP connection to your workstation. If all you
have is a mainframe terminal or a pc with a 3270 card, then you will not
be able to access Pegasus.
- Pine does not have any calendar or reminder functions.
- PROFS users have the ability to recall unread notes by using the
RECALL command from the PROFS main menu. This function is not available
on Pegasus.
- PROFS users who regularly communicate with you will have to register
your new Pegasus address and update any mailing lists they may have
created that include your PROFS id. Additionally, any mail you send to a
PROFS user will include about a page of mail routing information at the
top of your note.
- You may need to make sure that any mailing lists you are subscribed
to are updated with your new Pegasus address. Although mail forwarding
will take care of this in most cases, not all mail may reach you.
- If you exceed your Pegasus disk quota and do not resolve it within
one week, the system will prevent you from creating or updating any more
files. This will prevent you from sending or saving any mail. The
CLEANOFF program that you may have used to resolve a similar problem on
PROFS is not available on Pegasus. Therefore, you will need to be more
diligent about keeping your note logs purged.
If You Want To Migrate To Pegasus
If you wish to begin using Pine on Pegasus, you need to decide what you
would like to do with your PROFS account:
- If you need to use QMF or any other utility on the mainframe, then
you must keep your account. You can still have all your mail forwarded
to your Pegasus account.
- If you do not wish to keep your PROFS account, call or send a note to
the Help Desk (from PROFS: HELP; from Pegasus:
help@ucf1vm.cc.ucf.edu) and request that your account be
deleted and that all your mail be forwarded to your Pegasus account.
- If you do not delete your PROFS account, disk space charges will
still accumulate for it, even though you may not be using it.
If you do not currently have a Pegasus account and you are USPS staff,
you will need to contact the I&R Accounting Office (x2768) and obtain a
request form. This form must be signed by your supervisor. There is no
charge for this account.
If You Need To Keep Your PROFS Account
If you wish to keep your PROFS account and also have a Pegasus account,
be aware that you will now have to check your mail in two different
places. This can be resolved by one of the following methods:
- You can have all your PROFS mail forwarded to Pegasus. The drawback
to this is that the PROFS command will no longer function properly.
However, you can still continue to use QMF or any other mainframe
utility. If you want to have your PROFS mail forwarded, call or send a
note to the Help Desk.
- You can have all your Pegasus mail forwarded to PROFS. The drawback
to this is that responding to a Pegasus (or Internet) user can be a
little more difficult; you will either have to set up a nickname for the
user, or use EXTERNAL when sending a note. This issue is covered in more
detail in the handout, "Communicating With Other Users", available from
Computer Services.
In Conclusion...
This memo hopefully gave you more information to consider whether or not
you wish to begin using Pine on Pegasus. If you need further information,
the following handouts are available:
