 Professional Development for Music Educators in Title I Public
Schools in Orange County
UCF is collaborating with Orange County Public Schools to provide
professional growth and development opportunities for music educators in Title I schools.
The project, called Music: Personal, Cultural, Universal, is in its third
year supported by funding from the United States Department of Education.

2002
Florida Arts Recognition Award
The
Florida Arts Recognition Award recognizes outstanding
initiative, leadership and excellence in support the
arts in Florida. Dr. Mary Palmer was recently named
as the 2002 honoree. Dr. Palmer, Founder of ACE/FAAE,
has demonstrated significant contributions to the advancement
of the arts in Florida and in the nation through both,
her lifetime commitment to the arts. Through her work
which spans several decades, Dr. Palmer's vision has
led to statewide long-range plans for arts education,
including the FALCON Plan, adopted by the Florida Legislature,
as well as a statewide blueprint for arts education
developed by ACE/FAAE.

What
happened in Summer 2002
Twenty-three students completed 2002 summer graduate
study at UCF. Summer faculty included award-winning
composer Stella Sung; award-winning composer and conductor
David Brunner; UCF Director of Bands Rick Greenwood;
sight-singing and pedagogy expert Al Holcomb; and Coordinator
of Graduate Studies in Music Education Mary Palmer.
Special guest faculty included June Hinckley, past president
of MENC:The National Association for Music Education
and Fine Arts Consultant for the Florida Department
of Education; Carolyn Minear, President of the Florida
Music Educators Association and Fine Arts Coordinator
for Orange County Public Schools; Bobby Adams, President
of the Southern Division of MENC and Professor of Music
at Stetson University. The faculty and students work
together in a comprehensive musicianship approach to
music history, theory, conducting and teaching.
The 2001 Charter class of graduate students
are scheduled to graduate at the end of Summer 2003.
Students entering the program in 2002 will graduate
in Summer 2004. The students pictured here are looking
forward to welcoming new colleagues, the class of 2005,
during the 2003 Summer Music Education Session at UCF.
