4OTH ANNIVERSARY CONFERENCE

The Africa Institute of South Africa on its 40th anniversary is organizing a two-day conference in May-June 2000 around the theme:

"A United States of Africa?"

The theme of the conference is a response to a call made at the extra-ordinary OAU meeting in Libya in September 1999. The aim is to tackle socio-political, economic, youth, environmental, health and gender challenges relating to the political unity of the continent.

Interested scholars to submit papers on the following themes:

• African Political Unity in Historical Perspective
• Africa in the New Millennium: Challenges
• African Parliament
• Peace, Security and African Political Unity
• South Africa in Africa
• Globalization and the African Renaissance
• African Foreign Policies
• Democratisation and African Political Unity
• Civil Society and African Political Unity
• Globalization and Regional Integration
• The Future of SADC and the OAU
• Africa in the Media
